Sonia Alonso
Dr. Sonia Alonso is senior research fellow in the research unit "Democracy: Structures, Performance, Challenges." at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung.
She studied political science at the University of Deusto (Spain) and took the M.A. Program at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences, Juan March Institute, Madrid. She is Doctor in Political Science by the Autonomous University of Madrid. In 1998 she received the Doctoral Thesis Prize of the Economic and Social Council of Spain and became Doctor Member of the Juan March Institute. Between 1999 and 2001 she was Senior Associate Member at St. Antony´s College, Oxford; from 2001 to August 2004 researcher and teacher at the Department of Political Science and Sociology, Carlos III University, Madrid. Main research interests: the analysis of democratizing countries, in particular the transformation of mass movements into political parties, the inclusion of ethnic minorities into democratic politics, and the relationship between ethnicity, ethnic politics, and political accountability in both new and old democracies.
